Spatial Jobs Online News Bulletin
July 2014 Issue 59
Now here is a novel idea – Australia invades the USA and changes all the place names! The “New Australia Map” by Google Maps Mania appeared in Spatial Source – Best of Blogs. It was posted on July 4 – Independence Day with apologies to all American readers (ditto).
The writer, Keir Clarke, replaced all of the States names with some of his favourite Australian place names. He said “The New Australia map was really too hard to resist creating. The combination of some wonderful Aboriginal place names with some of Australia's funnier place names just seemed too hard to ignore.”
Florida became Dismal Swamp, he says it was by accident and New York – Useless Loop! But what is it about Australians, do we all have stutters or do we repeat the name to be able to remember it - Wagga Wagga, Boonoo Boonoo, Dum Dum and Bong Bong and of course we all know about Woop Woop, many of us end up there. Yes, they all exist in Australia and no doubt our overseas visitors all want to go to Tom Ugly and Cyanide Swamp. Click on the link above and have a bit of a laugh. It will make you feel good.
