Yasmin Fisher - Spatial Jobs Profile

Yasmin Fisher

Spatial Analyst

Education:
2011 Grad Dip Geospatial Information (with Distinction), RMIT University.
2007 Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science, Monash University.

I am an enthusiastic spatial analyst seeking potential job opportunities in the industry, having recently graduated from the post graduate Diploma of Geospatial Information at RMIT.  I have nearly two years of professional experience working in a contract role as a GIS Consultant within an urban planning consultancy called SGS Economics and Planning, while studying for the Diploma.  Now that I have fully graduated I am actively seeking opportunities to further develop my career as a spatial professional.

Prior to commencing the Grad Dip I gravitated towards jobs that involved maps; firstly as an Administrator of Environmental Planning and Compliance in a telecommunications construction company, and then as a Data Quality Officer in the titles office at Land Victoria, where I got the opportunity to analyse maps and plans on a daily basis.  My undergraduate studies involved majors in Geography and Environmental Science in my Arts degree and Atmospheric Science in my Science degree, giving me a pretty solid background in these areas.  The Grad Dip provided me with some further technical skills in geospatial technologies, with GIS subjects using ArcGIS software, along with subjects in remote sensing using satellite imagery program Erdas Imagine, and in multimedia cartography using Adobe Illustrator, as well as web coding skills to present maps via the Internet.

My role as a GIS consultant with SGS Economics and Planning has provided me with nearly two years professional experience using MapInfo Professional software.  In the role I've gathered some valuable GIS experience, including working with large data sets, as part of a large two year state government project analysing Melbourne's capacity to accommodated future housing development.    I also gained quite a lot of cartographic experience in the role, as I regularly produced high quality maps to be used in proposals, written reports, presentations to clients and colleagues and even an international journal for the Smith Institute publication 'Investing in Better Places: International perspectives.'

I really enjoy being able to pull together data within the GIS system and produce outputs that are able to paint such a solid picture, without the need for many words.  Ideally I would like to continue applying my spatial skills in the urban planning field, as this is an area I have a particular passion for.  My thesis for the Grad. Dip looked at applying spatial analysis techniques, such as spatial auto-correlation, to Melbourne's property market using both ArcGIS and MapInfo software.  The aim was to see if the market had become more spatially fragmented between the early 90s and today, with the clustering of areas of similar price.  With my background in environmental science and climate change, I also wouldn't mind applying my spatial skills to these areas.  I am however generally willing to try out different industries that require my skill set.

While I am currently located in Melbourne, I am open to the opportunity to move interstate or even overseas. I love travel and have been lucky enough to travel quite widely through Europe, North America, Asia, parts of Africa and the Middle East (collecting quite a few maps along the way!).  I have also lived for short periods of time in South Korea, Russia, Germany and the USA.

I am eager to grow my knowledge and experience in the spatial field and am available straight away for any suitable opportunities that arise, either permanent or contract. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a copy of my CV or if you would like to discuss potential employment opportunities.
