I am currently a full time student
undertaking the Certificate 3 in Surveying and Spatial Information Services as
part of the Diploma course. I completed the Certificate 2 in this field last
year which confirmed to me that this is the direction of career change that
really matches my abilities and expectations. I am really excited about
becoming certified, and moving into what I hope will be the rest of my working
career in the spatial industry.
As a 36 year old, I have an extensive
range of work experience.
Going back to the early nineties I
was a fitness instructor, since then I have been a labourer in areas such as
landscaping and factory’s, I have manufactured carpet, worked as a sales rep
and also in retail.
Most recently (the last ten years), have
been spent working as an Airline Services Operator at the Adelaide Airport. It
was in this most recent role I realised that I wanted a change in career.
About five years ago I attended a
career/skills expo on a day off from work and got talking to a guy who was
representing the surveying side of the spatial industry. I was instantly drawn
in to what he had to say and I went home with all the paperwork and intentions
of becoming a newly trained surveyor.
In reality, at that time I just
wasn’t ready to leave a well paying job that I was a little bit too comfortable
with.
The desire to move into surveying
didn’t leave me and I finally made the decision to commit to full time study, realising
that this was the career I definitely wanted to be in.
As I am in the early stages of my
studies, I am aware that as I learn more and become more involved, my ideas of
exactly what industry sector and work area I move into will evolve.
At this stage I am just looking
forward to getting some experience working in the industry, building my
knowledge, and learning from the more experienced.
I have recently met the guys in ‘The
young professionals’ team from SSSI and it was really encouraging to hear how
much backing and support we have as students and future workers. This
reinforces to me what a great industry this is and that there is a solid future
in becoming a surveyor. I am looking forward to becoming more involved with
this team at the various events.
I am confident that even at this
early stage in my learning, I would be an asset to any company looking for a suitable
person to fill a role at an entry/assistant level.
