Candidate profile - Haohui Chen

Haohui Chen

Research Interest

• Environmental Visualization
• Combining the concepts of Web 2.0 and Mobile Internet with spatial technologies (GIS) to improve people’s lives

My Career Path

A. Cofounder March 2011 – September 2012

Social County Pty Ltd
Development of a location‐based marketing platform – NearByr (http://www.nearbyr.com). It includes
an iPhone application and a web site, where registered merchants are able to publish promotions with
diverse prizes, i.e., the first prize only for 1 person to enjoy “a free meal”, and second prize only for 5
people to enjoy “30% off the total bill”. Mobile users receiving this information should come to the
venue as early as possible to claim for the first prize. This platform was invented in the context of
combination of Web2.0, Mobile Internet and GIS to research how mobile users interact with each other
within a competitive environment. SOA compliant application with modular components being
developed in iOS and Java EE framework: Spring, Maven 2, Hibernate, PostgreSQL (PostGIS), JBoss AS
4.2, iOS, GeoTools, JQuery, Javascript, Html, CSS, Google Maps API.
• Inventing the idea and formulating the implementation plan
• Team leader in charge of coordinating the development, integration and troubleshooting issues of
combining different technologies and platforms
• Designing the required system architecture
• Programming in both back‐end and front‐end (objective‐C and Javascript)
• Install and manage development and QA servers
• Implement security framework and policies
• Data analysis

B. Postgraduate Researcher March 2008 – March 2011

CRCSI
Working closely with the Precision Agriculture Research Group in the University of New England to
perform a research specializing in assisting geographically distributed farmers, consultant and
scientists to communicate with each other and share expertise within the 3D context. The deliverables
of the research are an iPhone application and a 3D viewer for users to store, transfer and visualize
farming data. A case study was carried out in a farming environment with real farmers, scientists and
consultants. This research proposed a new paradigm for distributed communications and knowledge
management.
• Designing the system architecture
• Programming in both back‐end and front‐end (objective‐C, Javascript, Adobe Flex and Java)
• Install and manage development and QA servers
• Implement security framework and policies
• Data analysis
Participating in a research project ‐ SIEVE (Spatial Information Exploration and Visualization
Environment) with the supports from the Department of Primary Industry to visualize the climate
change data in a 3D context. Development of a collaborative virtual environment based on a game
engine. A workshop was hosted in Portland, Victoria with audiences of local residents to demonstrate
scenarios based on different climate change criteria.
• Programming
• Preparing scenarios based on requirements
• Data procession
• Data analysis

C. GIS Engineer & Consultant August 2004 – March 2008

Sogreah China (acquired by ARTELIA)
Guangdong Pearl River Delta Urban Environment Project (funded by the World Bank): This project
reviewed the wastewater treatment situation in Pearl River Delta to propose a more sustainable and
effective solution. Sogreah China was in charge of interviewing with relevant partners, collecting data,
analyzing the wastewater distribution, reviewing wastewater treatment plants under construction and
proposing improvements. The technologies include: MySQL, ArcGIS (ArcMap, ArcScene, and AO API),
Google Earth, and C++.
• Formulation of user requirements
• Data collection and processing
• Designing a database to store spatial data
• Development of a set of data visualization and simulation tools based on ArcGIS ArcObjects (Visual
C++) to assist local authorities and environmental engineers to review the current water situation
and simulate different scenarios of the upcoming wastewater demands.
